The San Francisco Bay Area, colloquially known as the Bay Area or The Bay
Rapid Transit rapid transit, transportation system designed to allow passenger travel within or throughout an urban area, usually employing surface, elevated, or underground railway systems or some combination of these.  District (BART) has asked Cubic Transportation Systems, a subsidiary of San Diego-based Cubic Corp. (AMEX AMEX

:CUB), to replace fare collection equipment at the transit authority's five extension stations with Cubic's new advanced electronic ticketing system.

The $5.5 million order is added "scope" to a $31 million contract awarded to Cubic in 1999 to put new ticket vending machines and faregates in all but the newer BART stations, which went into operation in the mid-1990s. With the latest order and other options exercised since the initial contract, the total BART order for Cubic products and services now totals $53 million.

The new agreement represents a decision by BART to have a complete Cubic solution for ticket vending machines, faregates and "add fare" machines throughout the BART system. The new equipment uses a processing architecture compatible with Cubic's Nextfare(TM) Solution Suite for advanced integrated ticketing.

"Cubic's next-generation equipment is designed to support both magnetic ticketing, now in use by BART, and smart cards. By going with our equipment, which includes Cubic's Tri-Reader(R) technology for integration across its fare collection system, BART is 'future proofing' its system to assure complete flexibility in any future smart card selection," said Walter C. Zable, president and chief executive officer, Cubic Transportation Systems.

The Cubic Tri-Reader is the transit industry's first card reader that processes multiple card technologies, including ISO (1) See ISO speed.

Cubic will deliver and install the new equipment to all 43 BART stations next May.
