Cubic Teams with MARTA to Give Atlanta and APTA Annual Meeting Attendees A Preview of Region's Future All Smart Card-Based Ticketing System.

SAN DIEGO San Diego (săn dēā`gō), city (1990 pop. 1,110,549), seat of San Diego co., S Calif., on San Diego Bay; inc. 1850. San Diego includes the unincorporated communities of La Jolla and Spring Valley. Coronado is across the bay.  -- The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority, more commonly called MARTA, is the principal rapid-transit system in the Atlanta metropolitan area and the ninth-largest in the United States.  (MARTA), in partnership with the agency's systems integrator, Cubic Transportation Systems, Inc., a subsidiary of Cubic Corporation (AMEX AMEX

MARTA's general manager Nathaniel Ford Nathaniel Ford (c. 1795 - January 9 1870) was an American politician and Oregon pioneer during the time of the Oregon Territory. He also lost a civil case that freed his slaves that he had brought across the Oregon Trail from Missouri.  kicked off Atlanta's newest brand, a smart card for public transportation, called "Breeze" at a press conference on October 13. "Breeze" will make it easy for commuters to travel seamlessly throughout Atlanta using one common smart card to pay for rail, bus, L-van (paratransit) fares and park-and-ride fees. In the future, the card could potentially be used for event ticketing, retail purchases, security access and more.

"This program is one of the most exciting developments in MARTA's history. It will allow us to dramatically improve customer service and also reduce the amount of fare evasion Fare evasion, as distinct from fare avoidance, is the act of illegally travelling on public transport, having deliberately not purchased the required ticket to travel (having had the chance to do so).  that the system suffers from each year," said Ford.

Cubic is designing, building and delivering the new smart card-only multi-modal fare collection and revenue management system under a $72.5 million contract the company received last year. MARTA's new multi-application system will make it fast, easy and convenient for daily commuters and occasional public transit users and tourists alike, while increasing revenues and operational efficiency for the agency.

"At a critical time in our nation when urban gridlock Gridlock

and pollution impact our quality of life, MARTA has taken a leadership role in positioning Atlanta for the future by investing in a system that emphasizes ease of use for its customers and the potential opportunity to link with regional participants for seamless fare collection and management," said Marty Turock, senior vice president, sales and marketing, for Cubic Transportation Systems. "We are honored to have had the opportunity to participate in the APTA APTA American Physical Therapy Association.  events which have introduced the entire community to the benefits of smart card technology and how it will change the way they feel about public transportation to make it a positive, more convenient and safer experience."

MARTA is replacing its existing magnetic ticketing and token-based system with Cubic's advanced fare collection system of operational software, computer networks, communications, high-speed smart card encoding machines, sales terminals for customer agents, parking equipment, bus fareboxes, faregates and multi-language ticket vending machines that issue smart cards. Cubic is also providing innovative, value-added capabilities including Autoload, electronic transit benefits delivery, Internet-based ticketing and credit-debit payment.
