Cubic Memory introduces 16 and 32 Mbyte DRAM PC Cards for IBM ThinkPad notebook computers; enables 360 Series ThinkPads to address a total of 36 Mbytes system memory.

SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 10, 1995--Cubic Memory Inc. has expanded its 3DMemory(TM) product family of 88-pin JEDEC The division of the Electronic Industries Alliance (EIA) that deals with semiconductor standards (officially, the JEDEC Solid State Technology Association of EIA). JEDEC was formed in 1958 when the Joint Electron Tube Engineering Council (JETEC) split into two Joint Electron Device  memory modules for portable computers with 16 and 32 Mbyte DRAM PC Cards for IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries)  ThinkPad(R) 360 and 750 Series notebook computers A laptop computer that weighs in a range from five to seven pounds. The term originated when laptops were routinely more than 10 pounds, and those that became lighter were placed in a special "notebook" category. In practice, notebook computer and laptop computer are synonymous. . The card fits under the keyboard in the ThinkPad's special Type I PCMCIA-style slot for additional system memory.

Cubic Memory uses a patented assembly process to pack more memory into small packages, while reducing power consumption and operating temperature of the memory module.

"Many portable computer manufacturers, including IBM, are now producing systems with a small amount of memory on the motherboard and a single add-in slot for additional memory," said Chet Brown, Cubic Memory's president and chief executive officer. "Our latest cards provide the maximum addressable Reachable. When something is addressable, it can be identified and manipulated independently of its surroundings. For example, screen pixels and RAM memory are addressable. Each of the screen's picture elements can be individually turned on and off, and each of the memory's bytes can be  expansion memory for the popular ThinkPad 750 Series notebooks, in a lower-cost, lower-power, no parity Not using a parity bit to check for errors. For example, an 8-N-1 setting in a communications program, which was widely used before the Web, means each character transmitted contains (8) eight bits, (N) "no" ninth parity bit and (1) one additional stop bit to mark the end. See non-parity memory.  configuration. In addition, our 32 Mbyte card enables the 360 Series to exceed the manufacturer's specified maximum of 20 Mbyte to achieve a total of 36 Mbyte with the 4 Mbyte on the motherboard."

Cubic Memory's 32 Mbyte card for the ThinkPad 360 or 750 Series (part number CM0032DM-C033-01), has a 32-bit JEDEC/JEIDA memory interface, and uses 70 ns DRAM organized 8 Mword x 32-bit. The 16 Mbyte card for the ThinkPad 360 or 750 Series (part number CM0016DM-C033-01), is organized 4 Mword x 32-bit. It conforms to PC Card (formerly PCMCIA (Personal Computer Memory Card International Association, San Jose, CA, www.pcmcia.org) An international standards body and trade association that was founded in 1989 to establish a standard for connecting peripherals to portable computers. PCMCIA created the PC Card. See PC Card. ) release 2.0 mechanical dimensions, and measures 85.6mm (L) x 54mm (W) x 3.3mm (W).

In addition to these 16 and 32 Mbyte cards for the IBM ThinkPads, Cubic Memory manufactures 16 and 32 Mbyte half-size cards for Panasonic CF-41 multimedia notebooks, and 16 and 32 Mbyte PC Cards for Toshiba 1900, 1910, 1950, 1960, 4500, 4600, 4700, 4800 and 4900 Series notebooks. Additional versions will be added this year for other notebook computers. Standard and custom configurations in densities up to 128 Mbytes are also available to OEMs.

The 3DMemory DRAM cards for IBM, Panasonic and Toshiba systems are sold through the reseller channel to end users. At today's memory prices, estimated street prices are $970 for the 16 Mbyte card and $1,939 for the 32 Mbyte card. Both memory cards are available now.
