Cubic Helps BART Launch San Francisco International Airport Service.

The San Francisco Bay Area, colloquially known as the Bay Area or The Bay

, it will be introducing to commuters a state-of-the-art fare collection system designed and delivered by Cubic Transportation Systems Inc., a subsidiary of San Diego-based Cubic Corp. (AMEX AMEX

The Cubic system will give BART the flexibility in the future to transition to smart card-based ticketing that will be employed by neighboring transit agencies throughout the region.

"The Cubic system introduces a new era of convenience, reliability and ease of use in support of our immediate objectives to deliver a BART-to-SFO extension while enabling our future goals for regional interoperability," said BART General Manager Thomas Margro.

Cubic's advanced fare collection system will support the magnetic tickets currently in use and features an "open system" architecture based on the patented Cubic Tri-Reader(R), which will process any type of smart card that meets international industry standards. The new system will allow commuters to pay for transit fares Transit fares are fees charged for travel on publicly chartered or operated transportation systems, including rapid transit trains, trolleys and buses (as these are known in northeastern parts of the United States).  as well as parking fees using their magnetic tickets or cash.

The Cubic system-which consists of operating software, communications, fare gates, and vending and add fare machines-has been installed across the 8.7 mile extension of four new stations: South San Francisco South San Francisco, city (1990 pop. 54,312), San Mateo co., W Calif.; inc. 1908. The system also has been installed at the existing Daly City Daly City, city (1990 pop. 92,311), San Mateo co., W Calif., a suburb of San Francisco; inc. 1911. Daly City is primarily residential, its population having grown significantly since the 1970s.  and Colma stations.

This latest delivery is part of $53 million in orders that have been awarded since 1999 when BART replaced legacy equipment with the more modern and reliable Cubic fare collection system. The system rollout began last October with the Concord and Fruitvale stations followed by the airport extension. The entire modernization program is scheduled for completion later this year.
