Cubic Defense Systems Demonstrates Air Combat Training System Interoperability; Latest Display Stations at ``Commando Sling''.

Cubic Defense Systems, the pioneer and leader in the development of air

combat training systems, successfully demonstrated the interoperability of dissimilar training systems during its support of "Commando Sling," a joint air combat training exercise between the U.S. Air Force and the Republic of Singapore Air Force. Cubic Defense Systems is a subsidiary of San Diego-based Cubic Corp. (AMEX:CUB).

At the same time, the company introduced new display stations that are smaller, lighter and more transportable, said Project Manager Keith Shean. "The display stations were small enough to be flown to Singapore as part of normal airline baggage," he said. "This significant reduction in the size and weight of display and computer hardware has made a tremendous improvement in attaining 'true' transportability for deployed training."

Shean said Cubic Defense Systems and Cubic Worldwide Technical Services provided operational support for the Commando Sling exercise in Singapore July 12-30, marking the first time that pods and displays from two different companies have been interfaced to support an air combat training exercise.

"As the air forces of both U.S. and allied forces continue to conduct joint training using transportable systems, the need for interoperability becomes even more important. This capability ensures that squadrons and wings can take their training systems with them on deployments and debrief the full mission with the host country," Shean said.

For this exercise, the 18th Wing from Kadena Air Base, Okinawa, took five Kadena Instrumented Training System (KITS) pods to support three missions a day (primarily 2v2 missions) for 15 flying days. The five pods remained fully capable for the entire training exercise, he said. Cubic provided the pods when it installed KITS in 1997.

Shean said that the military services have listed interoperability between air training ranges as an essential capability for the past 20 years. "With advanced technology that has produced 'rangeless' air combat training systems that do not require a fixed ground infrastructure and are highly transportable for use on deployments, the need for interoperability to support deployed training is even more acute," Shean explained.

Shean said that the U.S. Air Force and Republic of Singapore Air Force have scheduled six "Commando Sling" exercises for Fiscal Year 2000. Both Cubic Defense Systems and Cubic Worldwide Technical Services will support each of the joint training deployments, he said.

Cubic developed KITS under contract to the U.S. Air Force. It is the U.S. military's first rangeless air combat training system and it is operational with the 18th Air Wing at Kadena Air Base, Okinawa, and the Michigan National Guard Combat Readiness Training Center at Alpena, Mich. KITS is based on Cubic's Air Combat Training -- Rangeless, or ACT-R technology.
