The new system, known as FasTIS, will replace Northern Rail's APTIS APTIS All Purpose Ticket Issuing System (UK rail ticket system)  system, also a Cubic system, which has been the workhorse for the rail industry in the UK for almost 20 years. Northern Rail will install and integrate 236 new FasTIS units at its 153 staffed stations as well as at its two training academies.

Designed to provide a state-of-the-art ticket issuing system for use in rail booking offices, FasTIS provides streamlined ticket issuing while reducing wait times and long passenger lines at the point of sale. The user-friendly interface and ease of operation are central features of the new system which helps operators improve productivity and reduce rail retail costs.

FasTIS was also designed for use with Cubic's contactless reader module used in London's Oyster(R) ticketing system, which allows it to be interoperable with the Oyster card. Cubic developed and delivered the Oyster card system for Transport for London's Underground and buses.
