SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 1, 2003

Cubic Defense Applications, a unit of Cubic Corp. (AMEX AMEX

See: American Stock Exchange
:CUB), announced it has received a $3 million contract for the supply of high frequency (HF) power amplifiers Power amplifier

that will be used in military land-based communications systems In telecommunication, a communications system is a collection of individual communications networks, transmission systems, relay stations, tributary stations, and data terminal equipment (DTE) usually capable of interconnection and interoperation to form an integrated whole. .

The amplifiers are part of system being procured under a foreign military sales That portion of United States security assistance authorized by the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961, as amended, and the Arms Export Control Act of 1976, as amended. This assistance differs from the Military Assistance Program and the International Military Education and Training Program  contract.

Radio frequency (RF) amplifiers are used in HF communications systems for air traffic control and military and commercial communications. They have proved to be extremely reliable for long-range or "over-the-horizon" communications. In the past, these amplifiers have been used in a number of large U.S. and foreign HF modernization programs.

"While HF communications has been available from the earliest days of radio, it remains a reliable and low cost alternative to satellite communications and is often used in today's 'toughest' circumstances. Cubic's HF communications systems played a critical role in communicating with inbound and outbound international flights during the tragic events of September 11th. This new program should lead to additional follow-on business with this and other customers around the world as older systems are upgraded and new systems are deployed," said Rick Lober, senior vice president for Cubic's Communications Business Unit.

Cubic's High Power Radio Frequency (RF) communications business has been growing rapidly since Cubic acquired a small San Jose-based manufacturer of HF/RF amplifiers in 2001. Since then Cubic has expanded this technology to provide amplifiers that provide exceptional performance for over-the-horizon radar A radar system that makes use of the atmospheric reflection and refraction phenomena to extend its range of detection beyond line of sight. Over-the-horizon radars may be either forward scatter or back scatter systems.  applications as well as high capacity land-based and shipboard ship·board
