The NIA announced the award during a banquet for sponsors of this year's "Best Ranger" competition at Fort Benning. Seth Bokmeyer, Cubic Defense Systems director of business development for MILES 2000, attended the banquet and accepted the award on behalf of Roberts.

Roberts received his Order of Saint Maurice in the Civis category, which is issued to civilian supporters of the Infantry for significant or outstanding contributions to the Infantry. Recipients of the order must be nominated by an active NIA member and demonstrate high standards of integrity, moral character, professional competence and dedication to duty. The award is held in high esteem by the infantry and the rest of the Army.

Reacting to the award, Roberts said he was honored by the NIA's recognition.

"Cubic Defense Systems is focused on listening to soldiers and applying technology in innovative ways that will enable our soldiers to fight, win and return home," he said. "I know how significant the award is and what it represents to the Infantry, and as a civilian recipient am humbled to be included in the ranks with those who are truly heroes of this country."

The Order of Saint Maurice is named after a commander of a Theban legion that served the Roman Empire in 287. When the Roman emperor ordered Maurice's completely Christian legion to make pagan sacrifices before a battle with the Gauls, Maurice refused to carry out the order and also refused to kill innocent civilians. The emperor subsequently had Maurice and the entire legion killed. Different versions of the Military Order of Saint Maurice have been used for several hundred years.

Bokmeyer and Earle Denton of the Cubic Defense Systems office in Orlando, Fla., also accepted a certificate of appreciation from the Army for CDS sponsorship of "Best Ranger." Bokmeyer said Cubic has been a Gold Sponsor for the past three years. Army Rangers have played an important part in the field-testing and fine-tuning of Cubic's MILES 2000 tactical engagement simulation A Tactical Engagement Simulation (TES) is a training system for using weapons.
