Inc. (Nasdaq:CRUS crus (krus) pl. cru´ra [L.] 1. leg (1). 2. a leglike part. crus ce´rebri ), announced today the industry's first single-supply, analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) capable of measuring ground referenced signals without external level-shifting components. Crystal reports that the highly integrated 16-bit CS5525 and 20-bit CS5526 ADCs specify all the capabilities needed to design complete signal acquisition solutions for industrial applications. "We've teamed up with top manufacturers of temperature measurement, pressure transmitter, process control and panel meter products to bring the most cost effective data conversion solution to market," said Mike Paquette, director of marketing for Crystal's Data Acquisition Products. "Our team effort and dedication to leading-edge technology have resulted in an industry first-namely, an affordable ADC/channel single-supply solution that brings 16-bit and 20-bit resolution over the entire thermocouple operating range for isolated systems." Crystal, the new ADCs combine low power requirements, the ability to handle negative input signals with a single power supply, stability over the full industrial temperature range, a simple interface, enhanced noise rejection, and programmability to provide an ideal, low-cost solution for isolated and non-isolated industrial signal acquisition applications. The CS5525/26 chips also specify a programmable gain amplifier and an on-chip charge pump A charge pump is an electronic circuit that uses capacitors as energy storage elements to create either a higher or lower voltage power source. Charge pump circuits are capable of high efficiencies, sometimes as high as 90-95% while being electrically simple circuits. drive to allow the measurement of full scale unipolar unipolar /uni·po·lar/ (u?ni-po´ler) 1. having a single pole or process, as a nerve cell. 2. pertaining to mood disorders in which only depressive episodes occur. signals of 25mV, 55mV, 100mV, 1V, and 5V, and bipolar signals (plus or minus) of 25mV, 55mV, and 100mV. A chopper stabilized instrumentation amplifier Instrumentation amplifier A special-purpose linear amplifier, used for the accurate amplification of the difference between two (often small) voltages, often in the presence of much larger common-mode voltages, and having a pair of differential (usually ensures signal stability (drift of 5nV/degrees Celsius) over the full industrial temperature range. This range selection and signal stability make the CS5525 and CS5526 ideal components for temperature measurement. Since industrial environments are full of electrical noise sources, the CS5525/26 reject noise at 50 Hz and 60 Hz simultaneously, as do all Crystal data acquisition parts. In addition, Crystal uses delta-sigma technology to provide true 16-bit and 20-bit input resolution with up to 18 bits of noise-free resolution. Other features include: -- A 3-wire SPI (1) (Stateful Packet Inspection) See stateful inspection. (2) (Service Provider Interface) The programming interface for developing Windows drivers under WOSA. and Microwire compatible serial interface that is simple to use and reduces the number of parts required for optical isolation. -- A 4-bit digital output latch to control multiplexers, switches, excitation sources and other peripheral components required for complete thermocouple, RTD RTD returned to duty (US DoD) RTD Rated RTD Ready to Drink RTD Richmond Times-Dispatch RTD Regional Transportation District RTD Research, Technological Development RTD Research and Technology Development RTD Real-Time Data , transmitter and panel meter application solutions. -- A set of read/write registers that provide an unprecedented level of system and self-calibration programmability. For example, the user can select from one of eight output updates rates. The ADCs can be instructed to read base-line calibration information from off-chip memory during power up. Input gain and offset can both be adjusted during operation. Support An evaluation board is available for each part, along with analysis software. Crystal also provides application notes on how to use the parts in multiplexed applications and how to interface them to the 80C51, 68HC05/11 and PIC microcontrollers. Data sheets and application notes can be found on Crystal's internet web site at www.crystal.com. Price and Availability The CS5525 and CS5526 are available in 20-pin Plastic-DIP (PDIP (Plastic DIP) See DIP. ) and 20-pin Shrink Small Outline Packages (SSOP SSOP Shrink Small Outline Package SSOP Sanitation Standard Operating Procedures (USDA) SSOP Sanitary Standard Operating Procedures SSOP Sharescan-Open Platform (Ecopy) SSOP Site Security Operational Procedures ) and sell for $5.80 and $8.90 in quantities of 1,000 respectively. Samples of the CS5526 are available now. Production quantities of both parts will be available in February 1997.
