Cruise Discounts Spur Demand, Keep Bookings Ahead of 2002 Pace, AAA National Travel Barometer Shows.

A major increase in cruise bookings -- up 25 percent from 2002 levels -- spurred AAA's overall travel bookings to a 5 percent increase this July July: see month.  compared to July 2002.

The AAA barometer is based on a sample of 13 clubs representing more than half of the association's 46 million members. It is intended to help gauge the strength of the leisure travel market.

Overall AAA travel agency bookings - cruise, tour packages, car rental and hotels - increased 5 percent in July (153,800) as compared to a year ago (145,800).

A summary of the AAA National Travel Barometer's measurements shows:

-- Cruise bookings (28,400) were at 125 percent of one year ago

(22,700).

-- Tour packages (40,900) were 108 percent of the July 2002 total

(37,800).

-- Hotel bookings (61,900) were about even with one year ago

(62,100).

-- Car rental reservations (22,600) were at 97 percent of a year

ago (23,200).

Visits to AAA travel offices at the 13 clubs surveyed were at 99 percent (175,000) of their level in July 2002 (177,100). (All numbers are rounded to the nearest hundred.)
