West Bromwich magistrates heard that Mohammed Fedar, 20, had mistreated the dangerous dog, which is believed to have been used for fighting.

The two-year-old dog, of a type banned in this country, was found to have 69 wounds when he was seized by police and the RSPCA RSPCA (in Britain) Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals

Acting on information from neighbours in December 2006, RSPCA inspectors visited the house, also owned by Fedar's family, and found the dog on a chain attached to a car tyre in the yard.

It had a ramshackle shelter which was open to the elements on one side, and a cracked water bowl.

The yard was littered with faeces, and the dog had been given only a dirty old rag for comfort.

Fedar claimed he had taken the dog in to his home after finding it in a park three or four days before the raid, said RSPCA prosecutor Nick Sutton.

"When asked why didn't he take it to the vet, he gave a wholly inadequate answer," Mr Sutton said.

Mr Sutton said a pit bull expert had said at least one of the deep gouge marks had been made just two days before the rescue. One of the wounds shown on the video was big enough for the vet to put his finger inside.

Magistrate Keith Barnfield said only a custodial sentence was appropriate and handed Fedar a 20-week sentence at a Young Offenders' Institution, suspended for a year.

Outside, Fedar first pulled up his hood to avoid being photographed but quickly relented and said: "I may as well strike a pose for you."

He later discovered the car he was leaving in had a parking ticket.
