The hotel was honored during a special ceremony at the annual Bass Hotels & Resorts Global Investors Conference held October 18 - 20, in Las Vegas Las Vegas (läs vā`gəs), city (1990 pop. 258,295), seat of Clark co., S Nev.; inc. 1911. The hotel is one of 10 chosen from more than 2,700 hotels for achieving the highest standards in modernization, and one of 139 properties selected for overall quality excellence. To receive the Quality Excellence Award, the hotel had to receive a high score in the Guest Satisfaction Tracking System, a system designed for guests to evaluate Crowne Plaza hotels and their performance, including product quality and customer service.

A comprehensive $12 million renovation completed in August 1998 converted the former Holiday Inn Select to the 403-room Crowne Plaza San Francisco Union Square. Trophies designating the Crowne Plaza San Francisco Union Square as a Modernization Award and Quality Excellence Award winner will be placed on permanent display at the hotel.

In a separate ceremony held by the National Association of Catering Executives San Francisco Bay/Area Chapter, the hotel was also awarded Monthly Meeting Venue for 1998/1999.
