Crown's superstores consist of the older superstores of 6,000 to 10,000 square feet and the new superstore prototype targeted to occupy 15,000 square feet. The new superstore prototype was implemented for all stores opening in April 1994 and thereafter.

Sales decreased 7 percent to $283.5 million for the 53 weeks ended Feb. 3 compared to the 52 week period one year ago. The decrease is primarily due to the net decrease in the number of stores as a result of the company's continuing transition to its new superstore concept. Over the last 12 months, Crown has closed 38 of the 2,000 to 6,000 square foot stores and opened 16 of the new prototype superstores. Comparable store sales for the 53 week period decreased 3 percent. Comparable sales for all superstores for the 53 week period decreased 2 percent, while the new prototype comparable store sales increased 9 percent.
