Crowds due for Halloween in Salem, Mass.

Police in Salem expect more than 100,000 people to descend on the self-proclaimed Halloween capital of the world.

And while ghosts and goblins are welcome, drunken or rowdy revelers are not. Officials say they intend to make sure the annual Halloween celebration in the Witch City remains a safe and family-oriented event.

A forecast of mild temperatures is expected to swell the costumed crowd for Haunted Happenings, which ends with a fireworks display over the North River.

Some Salem residents have criticized the festivities, saying they detract from the city's rich cultural heritage and trivialize the famed Salem Witch Trials of 1692.

Most restaurant and shop owners, however, say they welcome the extra business.
