PC Peter Doherty, who was fighting for his life, was today said to be improving after undergoing two emergency operations. Police chiefs said he had regained consciousness and had spoken to his family. Detective Superintendent Ken Lawrence said: "He appears to be doing well. His condition is still serious, however, though we hope that it will continue to improve."
