The district court denied the officials' motion for summary judgment motion for summary judgment n. a written request for a judgment in the moving party's favor before a lawsuit goes to trial and based on recorded (testimony outside court) affidavits (or declarations under penalty of perjury), depositions, admissions of fact, answers  based on qualified immunity, and the officials appealed. The appeals court reversed and remanded. The court held that the detainee failed to establish that officials disregarded any known risks to the detainee's health or safety while he was incarcerated incarcerated /in·car·cer·at·ed/ (in-kahr´ser-at?ed) imprisoned; constricted; subjected to incarceration.
