Crosspoint Solutions Introduces Low-Cost Plastic-Packaged FPGAs.

MILPITAS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 15, 1996-- Crosspoint Solutions Inc. announced today that the company's CP20K family of customer-programmable gate arrays is now available in 160- and 208-pin plastic quad flat packages (PQFPs) and, for the 4.2K-gate device, an 84-lead plastic leadless chip carrier A chip package that uses flat metal pads that make contact with the socket or circuit board. Contrast with leaded chip carrier. See CLCC.  (PLCC (Plastic Leaded Chip Carrier) A plastic, square, surface mount chip package that contains leads on all four sides. The leads (pins) extend down and back under and into tiny indentations in the housing. See chip package. ).

In addition, the 8.4K and 12.1K-gate devices will also be available in a 240-pin PQFP (Plastic Quad Flat Package) Refers to many varieties of QFP chip packages, which are molded in plastic. See QFP.  and 225- and 313-lead ball grid arrays (BGAs) later this year.

The 4.2K-gate devices are also available in 155-lead ceramic pin grid arrays (CPGAs) and 160-pin ceramic quad flat packs (CQFPs). The 8.4K-gate device is available in a 299-lead CPGA (Ceramic PGA) See PGA.

According to Mike Levis, Crosspoint Solutions' vice president of marketing, "We're seeing the leading edge of what we expect to be exponential growth Extremely fast growth. On a chart, the line curves up rather than being straight. Contrast with linear.  in the use of customer-programmable gate arrays in production runs of computer and communications systems. The availability of plastic FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) A type of gate array that is programmed in the field rather than in a semiconductor fab. Containing up to hundreds of thousands of gates, there are a variety of FPGA architectures on the market.  devices will be a key catalyst to make this a reality."

The quad flat packages -- available in 160- 208- or 240-lead varieties -- have industry-standard foot prints compatible with most mask-programmed gate array (MPGA mPGA Micro Pin Grid Array

) packages.

The planned 225- and 313-pin BGA (Ball Grid Array) A popular surface mount chip package that uses a grid of solder balls as its connectors. Available in plastic and ceramic varieties, BGA is noted for its compact size, high lead count and low inductance, which allows lower voltages to be used.  packages offer cost effective, high pin count plastic package options to traditional pin grid array See PGA.

Package nomenclature, budgetary pricing and availability for the entire Crosspoint Solutions CP20K Family appear in the table following, with the new packaging highlighted by a dash.

Crosspoint Solutions Inc. was founded in 1989 to develop and market the first real fully customer-programmable ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuit) Pronounced "a-sick." A chip that is custom designed for a specific application rather than a general-purpose chip such as a microprocessor. . The company's FPGAs feature compatible gate array architecture, and employ the same industry-standard EDA (1) (Electronic Design Automation) Using the computer to design, lay out, verify and simulate the performance of electronic circuits on a chip or printed circuit board.  (design) tools and libraries as the leading ASIC vendors.
