1 HAYWARD, CALIF. The second trial of three men accused of killing transgender teen Gwen Araujo began on June 1. Last year a jury deadlocked in the case after defense attorneys argued the crime was manslaughter, not murder.

2 HUNTSVILLE, TEXAS 

Richard Cartwright, 31, was executed by lethal injection on May 19 for the 1996 robbery and shooting death of Nick Moraida, a gay man, in Corpus Christi.

3 OKLAHOMA CITY, OKLA. The house approved a budget for state libraries after vowing to study policies on the placement of gay-themed books on children's shelves. Earlier in the month the house urged library officials to place gay books in the adult section.

4 SARASOTA, FLA. Mike LaFevers, a gay HIV-positive man who lives in the Sarasota-Bradenton area with his partner, Ray Efird, on June 5 announced his candidacy for the U.S. Congress from district 13, the seat currently hem by Republican Katherine Harris, the former secretary of state who became a well-known figure in the 2000 presidential election debacle,

5 BOSTON, MASS. The state's highest court on May 27 rejected a Roman Catholic activist's bid to halt same-sex marriages until after voters have weighed in on a constitutional ban, ending the last such legal challenge in the state.

6 MAKAWAO, HAWAII Officials at King Kekautike High School on the island of Maul restricted the showing of a video about antigay discrimination to students with parental permission after some parents objected.
