BURGLARS have created a stink after stealing thousands of pounds-worth of fresh seafood from a fish supplier.

The raid happened overnight on Tuesday at Latimers Shellfish shellfish, popular name for certain edible mollusks (see Mollusca), e.g., oysters, clams, and scallops, and for certain edible crustaceans, e.g., crabs, lobsters, and shrimps. All are aquatic invertebrates with shells; they are not fish.  Deli, on Bents Road, Whitburn, South Tyneside Whitburn is a village on the coast of North East England, in South Tyneside between Seaburn and Marsden. Etymology
This Whitburn has a different origin to the one in Lothian: it means "white barn or house " from Old English hwit "white" and bere-ærn
.

Among the catch the thieves stole were live crabs, boxes of sea bass, tuna and lemon sole and the haul has a value of more than pounds 3,000.

The fish was kept in a container in front of the shop, which was broken into before the raiders made their getaway.

Bob Latimer, who runs the deli with his son Robert, told how he arrived at work yesterday morning to find the empty storage container.

He added: "It was all locked up, so they must have smashed the locks and got in.

"We are talking about produce worth more than pounds 3,000 here.

"This was a huge, and heavy, amount of fish. It would have take more than a small car to take it all away.

"Someone must have known that amount of fish was stored on the premises, and much of it wasn't gutted, so it will useless to someone who doesn't have the skills to gut them.

"This fish was all fresh, it will only last a couple of days before it goes off so they will need to get rid of it quickly.

"I would like people to be aware that if they are offered any cheap fish in the next few days it could have been taken form us. I just hope the police can use the smell to trace the thieves."

Latimers Deli is famous for the quality of its fish and customers travel to the shop from all over the North East.

In 2007 it won the Radio Four best local retailer award for the region.
