Critter Couch Co. unleashes creature comforts for canines and kitties; designer pet furniture offers low maintenance and style.

LOS ALTOS Los Altos (lôs ăl`tōs, lŏs), residential city (1990 pop. 26,303), Santa Clara co., W Calif.; inc. 1952. There is diversified light manufacturing. , Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 14, 1995--A Bay Area company is making sofas that are sure to make some tails wag.

Critter Couch Company, based in Los Altos, manufactures stylish pet furniture that is comfortable for pets, complements the interior design of any room and is easy to clean. The couches have an upholstered look with removable 100 percent cotton covers that make them convenient to machine wash.

Fabric prints include plaid, floral, denim, beige and southwestern; however, clients can provide the company with their own fabric if they wish to place a custom order. They are available in two styles -- traditional and futon -- and four sizes to meet the needs of dogs and cats of all sizes.

"The inspiration for Critter Couches came from my own dogs," said Alice Sakamoto, president of Critter Couch Co. "One of them was getting up in years and no longer had the strength to climb on to my furniture to rest, while my younger dogs were getting into all kinds of dirt and heading right for the couch."

Sakamoto was very familiar with the standard, relatively shapeless shape·less
