Quitero (education, California State U.) reports findings from a qualitative, five-year study documenting various groups of teacher education students' work as they journey through their own teacher development process in literacy and curriculum development work. The participants include teachers, student teachers, and their pupils from pre-K through grade 3. The educators document their own experiences as they apply a critical literacy framework for focusing on story and multicultural children's literature and creating literacy opportunities that extend beyond the classroom to use the words of their families and communities for literacy education. The study considers learners' multiple languages and recognizes ways that multiple knowledge sources, identities, and language forms can contribute to the formation of new relationships, new knowledge, and new meanings. No subject index.
