) implemented Critical Path's hosted messaging service in June of 2001 to link more than 4,000 dealer participants in its new EzDealer.Net service. By choosing Critical Path, National City is offering its dealers with a branded Web-based email Web-based email or webmail is a term referring to an e-mail service intended to be primarily accessed via a web browser, as opposed to through an application such as Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express, Mozilla's Thunderbird or Apple's Mail.  service that has the reliability, security and scalability to meet business communication demands at a low and predictable monthly cost. Rather than incur the expense of purchasing the messaging infrastructure and dedicating valuable internal IT resources to support an in-house messaging system Software that provides an electronic mail delivery system. It is made up of the following functional components, which may be packaged together or independently.

, National City selected Critical Path to lower its total cost of ownership and increase its speed to market with this service.

Like many companies today, National City was faced with the need to more effectively communicate with a growing audience of constituents in disparate locations. The company created EzDealer.Net as an exclusive business-to-business communications Web site to improve communication between dealers and National City by providing an effective means to distribute company information such as training materials, bulletins, rate sheets, and other business information to over 4000 dealers located in 10 states. As part of this new service, National City turned to Critical Path to provide each dealer with a branded EzDealer.Net email account so that dealers can better serve their customers with timely and accurate information about National City's products and services. Prior to the use of Critical Path's hosted messaging services, individual dealers used their own personal email accounts, which lacked the security and reliability necessary for mission critical communications. National City will also use the dealers' EzDealer.Net email accounts to enhance communication with dealers by providing regular updates on program changes, rates, and other important announcements via email.

"Leveraging Critical Path's hosted messaging service ensures that National City dealers stay connected to the information they need to maintain maximum productivity," said Mark Dubis, vice president, National City's Dealer Finance. "Outsourcing (1) Contracting with outside consultants, software houses or service bureaus to perform systems analysis, programming and datacenter operations. Contrast with insourcing. See netsourcing, ASP, SSP and facilities management.  our messaging needs to Critical Path has saved us valuable IT resources and lowered our operational risk by leveraging the proven technological expertise, always-on reliability and security Critical Path delivers. The bottom line is that we have achieved an effective streamlining in the communication process with our dealers."

National City is leading the growing trend among corporations to outsource all or part of their Internet messaging needs to free themselves from the burden and expense of managing their own messaging solutions and focus on their core competencies A core competency is something that a firm can do well and that meets the following three conditions specified by Hamel and Prahalad (1990):
  1. It provides customer benefits
  2. It is hard for competitors to imitate
  3. It can be leveraged widely to many products and markets.
. IDC estimates that more than half of corporate mailboxes will be hosted (equivalent to 57 million mailboxes) by 2005.

"National City is a perfect example of why we expect hosted messaging will play an increasingly important role in successful eBusiness," said Sue Barsamian, Senior Vice President of Product Marketing at Critical Path. "As businesses look to improve competitiveness, they seek new ways of improving communication with external partners, boundary, branch and mobile workers. We believe our relationship with National City sends a strong message to companies worldwide that hosted messaging should be a key component of an overall communications strategy."
