Critical Path Debuts Directory Server 4.0 for Service Providers and Enterprises.

Business Editors/High-Tech Writers

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 28, 2001

New Directory Server Provides Highest Levels of Availability,

Manageability And Performance At-Scale

Critical Path, Inc. (Nasdaq:CPTH), a global provider of Internet Messaging and Directory Infrastructure, today announced the availability of its Directory Server Version 4.0. Critical Path's Directory Server 4.0 combines the best of Critical Path's directory technology with the LiveContent DIRECTORY secured with the acquisition of PeerLogic, to deliver the mission-critical functionality that can enable enterprises and service providers to manage increasingly complex IT infrastructures and rapidly expanding customer bases. Critical Path's Directory Server 4.0 provides continuous availability and performance at scale that corporations and services providers demand, while delivering interoperability with best-of-breed directory-enabled applications.

Critical Path's Directory Server 4.0 provides corporations with a solid foundation to support their electronic commerce and communication initiatives. A primary challenge of moving businesses online is managing new, increasingly complex relationships between users and shared resources Sharing a peripheral device (disk, printer, etc.) among several users. For example, a file server and laser printer in a LAN are shared resources. Contrast with shared logic. . In order to conduct business securely and effectively, it is critical that users be identified based on their individual profiles. The directory server stores authoritative user information used for this authentication (1) Verifying the integrity of a transmitted message. See message integrity, e-mail authentication and MAC.

(2) Verifying the identity of a user logging into a network.
. Critical Path's Directory Server 4.0 also enables role-based policy computing services and provides a consistent view of user identity information, authentication attributes, personal preferences, contact information and role association.

At the same time, service providers are seeing growth in their user bases and require a better method of managing user profile information. This activity is mission-critical not only for billing and management, but also for rapidly rolling out new services across disparate networks. Critical Path's Directory Server 4.0 is an ideal strategic repository for user identities from which service providers can provision new personalized per·son·al·ize

 services such as Internet messaging.

"Service providers and enterprises are realizing that directories provide the foundation for electronic commerce and communications, making them an instrumental part of Internet messaging infrastructure," said Mike Serbinis, chief technology officer for Critical Path. "Critical Path is committed to delivering the products that enable companies to overcome the complexity associated with building an Internet messaging infrastructure that can support the way business and communication is conducted today."

Introducing Critical Path's Directory Server 4.0

Critical Path's Directory Server 4.0 is a carrier-class directory that delivers the key features required in managing a distributed infrastructure: high availability Also called "RAS" (reliability, availability, serviceability) or "fault resilient," it refers to a multiprocessing system that can quickly recover from a failure. There may be a minute or two of downtime while one system switches over to another, but processing will continue. , interoperability, manageability and performance at scale.

Transactional Integrity Provides High Availability For Mission Critical Data -- Businesses are moving online, striving to conduct millions of dollars of business per minute on the Internet, and the information stored and exchanged is evolving from simple data to mission-critical digital assets. Directories are used as the core infrastructure for user identity management, which grants outside parties access to the digital assets required to conduct business today. Critical Path's Directory Server inherently supports transactional integrity, which prevents data corruption Data corruption refers to errors in computer data that occur during transmission or retrieval, introducing unintended changes to the original data. Computer storage and transmission systems use a number of measures to provide data integrity, the lack of errors.  problems and provides corporations and service providers with the highest levels of security and uptime.

Interoperability -- Critical Path's Directory Server 4.0 is designed for interoperability with a wide variety of directory-enabled applications, including extranet access management, Public Key Infrastructure, provisioning and meta-directory services. Critical Path's Directory Server 4.0 is standards-based from the ground up and is designed to support the existing heterogeneous network (networking) heterogeneous network - A network running multiple network layer protocols such as DECnet, IP, IPX, XNS.  and application infrastructure customers already have in place. This interoperability is accomplished through extensive support for X.500, LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) A protocol used to access a directory listing. LDAP support is implemented in Web browsers and e-mail programs, which can query an LDAP-compliant directory.  and Web standards Web standards is a general term for the formal standards and other technical specifications that define and describe aspects of the World Wide Web. In recent years, the term has been more frequently associated with the trend of endorsing a set of standardized best practices for  such as HTTP HTTP

 and Verisign.

Manageability -- The server ships with unique Web-based tools that allow single point management of globally distributed directories. Critical Path's Directory Server 4.0 features a Java-based platform independent tool that makes it easy to stop and start directory servers, view and manipulate multiple directory schema, build directory content, create replication agreements, perform full and incremental Additional or increased growth, bulk, quantity, number, or value; enlarged.

directory back-up and monitor and view diagnostics across the global directory infrastructure.

Performance At Scale -- Critical Path's Directory Server 4.0 has the ability to scale to support tens of millions entries with excellent performance characteristics. Among the scalability features is advanced replication capabilities and efficient memory management. In addition to selected attribute replication, it delivers multiple sub-tree replication and selected object class filtering, introducing greater granular control over what can and cannot be replicated. This feature reduces network and disk space requirements, reduces administration overhead, further enhances performance and provides greater control over the distribution of directory information.
