"Japanese have such confidence in their quality of product, they don't allow for unnatural failures," said John Pence, president of Ontrack. "No matter how good a computer system, there can be an unpredictable crisis -- fire, flood, virus, sabotage sabotage [Fr., sabot=wooden shoe; hence, to work clumsily], form of direct action by workers against employers through obstruction of work and/or lowering of plant efficiency. This computer system doctor has the remedy for ailing systems where standard access routes have failed. To a company with millions of dollars in data tied up -- believed lost -- Ontrack Data Recovery is like an angel of mercy.

But getting Ontrack into the Japanese market required consulting and ingenuity from trade representatives at the Minnesota Trade Office (MTO MTO Make-To-Order

), a division of the Department of Trade and Economic Development. It resulted in a triangular business agreement.

"The MTO was an important player on our team," Pence said. "With its advice, we asked the right questions and avoided problems." First, a technology transfer agreement was negotiated with Y-E Data, a $250 million floppy disc manufacturer that is a subsidiary of Yaskawa Electric. This was extremely important because of the proprietary techniques, involving intellectual property rights, that Ontrack uses to recover lost data.

Second, a marketing agreement was developed with Otsuka Shokai, a computer equipment distributor with nationwide retail sales and service connections.

Finally, Y-E Data opened a data recovery center in April and Ontrack was up and running in Japan. Inkie Rutgers, Japan trade representative at the MTO, said Ontrack is so satisfied with the Japanese agreement that it is considering similar negotiations in Germany and France.
