The announcement was made by Ellen Oppenheim, Executive Vice President/Chief Marketing Officer, MPA.

The Kelly Awards honor magazine campaigns that demonstrate both creative excellence and effectiveness. The awards were presented for the first time at the Association of National Advertisers' (ANA) Print Advertising Forum in New York City New York City: see New York, city.

The MPA Kelly Awards are named for Stephen E. Kelly, a former MPA president who devoted his career to magazine publishing. He promoted the concept that creative magazine advertising made the difference in sales results--a concept that became the guiding principle for the MPA Kelly Awards. Each year, an agency is awarded the $100,000 Grand Prize Kelly. Beginning in 2002, the Gold Kelly and the Silver Kelly have also been awarded.
