1. A region that constitutes the northern part of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It was settled by Serbs in the 7th century and became an independent state in the 12th century.
 Serbs were convicted of these crimes and sentenced to terms ranging from 12 to 28 years. The elements of the crime as set out in the summary of the trial judgment included that they were part of a systematic attack against Muslim civilians, part of which included "detaining women and girls in different locations where they could be raped." The evidence showed that these three were acting out of their own free will in detaining, raping, selling, and otherwise abusing women as young as twelve years old. While the judgment, available on the Tribunal's website, http://www.un.org/icty, makes for very disturbing reading, the fact that the international community has now made it clear that such behaviour is not acceptable even during war, is a step forward in building a humane humane
