Crime slashed.

Police in Washington are making life even more difficult for criminals - thanks to the hard work of the North Washington Police Community Team.

The team, backed by the Neighbourhood Renewal Fund, was set up 18 months ago and has had a huge impact on crime in the area.

Figures from April to August 2003, compared with the same period last year show that house burglaries fell by 34% from 107 to 70, thefts of vehicles are down 25% from 61 to 49 and there has been a 24% reduction in youth disorder, with incidents down from 409 to 310.

Sgt Ken Robinson, who is in charge of the team, said: "We are working with the community to help reduce crime and catch offenders."
