Mobile security cameras to combat crime and disorder are expected to come into operation in a suburb from next week.

The cameras, fixed to lamp-posts, can be moved around trouble spots or used during surveillance operations.

The two mobile machines will be deployed in the Newcastle area.

Potential locations include residential areas, outside pubs, shopping centres, bus stops and Metro stations.

A pilot scheme will start in Gosforth High Gosforth High may refer to:

  • Gosforth High Street, The High Street in the Gosforth suburb of Newcastle upon Tyne, England
 Street. The cameras will then be moved to other locations in the four wards covered by the scheme, East and West Gosforth West Gosforth also known as Gosforth West is an electoral ward in the north of Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne and Wear. It was created in 2004. The population of the ward is 9,681, 3.7% of the total population of Newcastle upon Tyne. Car ownership in the area is 78. , Parklands and Castle.

The cost of the scheme is pounds 26,000.
