Cricket: Sangakkara tops rankings.


SRI LANKA Sri Lanka (srē läng`kə) [Sinhalese,=resplendent land], formerly Ceylon, ancient Taprobane, officially Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, island republic (2005 est. pop.  batsman Kumar Sangakkara's brilliant performance against England this week has lifted him to top spot in the world Test rankings.

Sangakkara maintained his phenomenal recent run of formby hitting 92 and 152 to help Sri Lanka to an 88-run win in the first Test in Kandy.

His secondinnings century made him the first batsman to score in excess of 150 in four consecutive Test matches. He supplants Australia captain Ricky Ponting Ricky Thomas Ponting (born December 19 1974, in Launceston, Tasmania) is an Australian cricketer and current captain of the Australia national cricket team (for both One-Day International and Test cricket).  at the top of the ratings and his elevation means Sri Lanka now occupy top spots in batting and bowling.
