Cricket: Redgrave bowled over by centre.

Byline: By DAVID JONES David Jones is a common name, particularly in Wales, and there have been several well-known individuals with this name. Variations include Dave Jones and Davy Jones.

A NEW pounds 2m cricket and sports centre has already proved a big hit with the thousands who have used it.

Over 5,000 people have enjoyed the facilities so far since it opened its doors in February, and it is booked until next May.

The centre, attached to St Margaret's High School, Aigburth, is primarily for the development of cricket, but there are facilities for other sports such as gymnastics, indoor football, basketball, volleyball, netball netball

for the wider community and was yesterday officially opened by five times Olympic gold medallist Sir Steve Redgrave.

Assistant head John Ledger, said the centre, funded by governors, The Big Lottery and Department of Education and Science Department of Education and Science refers to two current and former government departments.

, had exceeded expectations. He said: "Over 40 cricket clubs have used it and 500 book-

ings have been taken from them and community groups. We are planning to run girls cricket coaching courses and we are just about to start a course for inner city schools.

The centre is being run as a business, but all the money will support the running of it and any future refurbishment.

Sir Steve said: "What I like about the sports centre is that not only the school will benefit but that it is opened up for the community. You must be extremely proud."

St Margaret's students use the centre during the day, but it is available to other schools, and then is transferred to community use in the evenings.

Groups can also make use of it at weekends - a gym group have booked it on Saturdays throughout the year - and more sports involvement will be encouraged to use it in 2007.

The centre comprises a main hall with four individual practice nets, with different surfaces for pace and spin bowling. A video playback room is available, too, for technique analysis and coaching. It also offers a fitness room, a dance studio and two community/classroom areas,

plus changing rooms.
