Cricket: Kirsten for India.


CRICKET: Gary Kirsten Gary Kirsten (born 23 November 1967 in Cape Town) was a South African cricketer, and opening batsman. He played 101 Test matches for his country. His half-brother Peter, also played cricket for SA and was a member of the South African World Cup team in 1992.  has agreed to become India's new coach.

The former South Africa opener has negotiated a two-year deal which will start on March 1, 2008.

It is believed the Board of Control for Cricket in India Cricket is the unofficial national sport of India, and its development has been closely tied up with the history of the country, mirroring many of the political and cultural developments around issues such as race, caste, religion and nationality.  wanted Kirsten to take charge for the forthcoming tour of Australia but the 40-year-old will only join the team Down Under for a short spell.

When asked if he thought his appointment would go down well with the players, he responded: "I have no concerns what the players think about my appointment."

Meanwhile, Younus Khan's 15th Test century helped Pakistan salvage a draw from the Second Test against India in Kolkata.
