Cricket: Batsmen shine for Glamorgan.

Byline: PHIL BENSON

GLAMORGAN'S batsmen dented Worcestershire's promotion hopes on the opening day of their Frizzell County Championship Division Two clash at Cardiff.

Third-placed Worcestershire must win if they are to stay on course for a place in the top flight next season, with just two matches remaining after this encounter and the leading five sides still in with a shout of promotion.

But competent batting throughout the top and middle order put Glamorgan in the box seat as they closed on 290-4 off 87.2 overs, with Adrian Dale undefeated on 50 and Jonathan Hughes Jonathan Hughes (born June 30, 1981 in Pontypridd) is a Welsh cricketer. He is a right-handed batsman and a right-arm medium-pace bowler who plays for Glamorgan.

Hughes has taken part in List A cricket since 2002 and is a competent batsman.

An attempted square cut was well held at point by Ben Smith, but Maynard's exit did nothing to hinder Glamorgan's early progress.

That left the hosts on 112-2 after 35 overs, but the arrival of Michael Powell at the crease saw Glamorgan step on the gas and gradually put themselves in a commanding position.

David Hemp had moved solidly onto 33 - striking four fours in the process - when he was on his way, run out by Smith with the score on 175.

But Powell was in the groove and struck nine boundaries on his way to a half-century, having faced 77 balls to lift Glamorgan to 203-3.

In tandem with Dale - they put on 92 for the fourth wicket - Powell lifted Glamorgan to 267 before he nicked one off Sheriyar behind to wicketkeeper David Pipe who safely held on to remove him 16 runs short of his century. Powell struck 10 fours and one six - clubbed off Batty over long-on.

But Dale picked up where Powell had left off, taking his time and patiently picking his shots to such effect that he closed unbeaten on 50 off 103 balls.

Hughes kept Dale company at the crease, closing on 12 not out having faced 16 balls to leave Glamorgan well-placed to rack up a commanding score today.
