Crews begin foundation work on Freedom Tower.

On the morning of April 27, crews entered the site and began work on the 1,776-foot building, which is scheduled for completion by the first quarter of 2011. Before workers can build up, however, they must first dig down.

"Construction right now is centered on preparation for laying the foundation," said Dara McQuillan, communications director for Silverstein Properties.

"Crews will start by setting up the equipment they'll need for excavation."

Workers from Laquila Group, the firm in charge of excavation and foundation work, will mobilize heavy equipment on the site, including excavators, drilling equipment, rock breaking equipment, hoe rams A hoe ram, hydraulic hammer, or demolition hammer is a hydraulic hammer used in demolition and excavation.[1] It is typically attached to an excavator or backhoe, and is used to break up large, solid objects such as concrete, asphalt, and rock. , rock drills and track loaders. Perimeter barriers will be installed to hold back soil as surveyors lay out the exact excavation plans for the foundation.

This first phase of construction is expected to take 10 to 12 months, officials say.

At the time of its scheduled completion in 2011, the Freedom Tower is expected to be the tallest building in America, rising more than 400 feet higher than the original twin towers.
