Crew probes the other side of hip-hop.

Byline: LEWIS TAYLOR The Register-Guard

THE PHARCYDE, an alternative hip-hop act, will headline the Calicom Tour, which will make a stop Tuesday at the McDonald Theatre, 1010 Willamette St.

The 9 p.m. show also features Souls of Mischief Souls of Mischief is a four member alternative hip hop group from Oakland, California, that is also part of the hip hop collective, Hieroglyphics. The Souls of Mischief formed in 1993 and is comprised of emcees A-Plus, Opio, Phesto, and Tajai.  (of Oakland's Hieroglyphics Crew), Planet Asia Planet Asia also known as King Medallions (real name Jason Green) is an underground rapper from Fresno, California who is a member of hiphop groups the Cali Agents, and Skhool Yard. ) and Pep Love (Hieroglyphics Crew).

Once a quartet, now a duo, the Pharcyde is touring in support of its first new album in five years, "Plain Rap."

Remaining members Romye "Booty Brown" Robinson and Imani Wilcox are still carrying the torch for the Los Angeles group, which came into focus in 1992 with an eccentric debut album, "Bizarre Ride II: The Pharcyde." The group followed in 1994 with "Labcabincalifornia," and then took a break to regroup re·group

The Pharcyde no longer includes Derrick "Fatlip" Stewart and Tre "Slimkid" Hardson, but Robinson and Wilcox are still upsetting the hip-hop apple cart. The Pharcyde's new album, which Robinson describes as "hip-hop blues," challenges some basic conventions, such as the stereotypical, goofy hip-hop intro.

The CD is "simple and stupid" and "more mature" than the previous releases, Robinson says.

Tickets to Tuesday's show are $18, $16 in advance, through Fastixx.

Afro-pop star Thomas Mapfumo will make a rare Eugene stage appearance at 9:30 p.m. today at the Wild Duck Music Hall, 169 W. Sixth Ave.

The Zimbabwean singer has been living in Eugene for the past year, but he doesn't often perform in his adopted hometown. An influential figure in the music and politics of his homeland, Mapfumo wrote the songs that became the "soundtrack" to the Zimbabwean freedom movement during the 1970s.

He's fallen out of favor with the current ruling party in Zimbabwe because of his politically charged songs, but Mapfumo remains one of his country's biggest stars. His "chimurenga" (music of struggle) is a mixture of traditional Zimbabwean music and contemporary Western themes.

Mapfumo and his band, the Blacks Unlimited, combine electric guitar with the amplified mbira mbira

(thumb piano) to create a signature sound that is both worldly and uniquely Zimbabwean.

Tickets are $14 in advance or $16 day of show.

The Columbus, Ohio, sextet Ekoostik Hookah will play at the WOW Hall, 291 W. Eighth Ave., at 9:30 p.m. Saturday.

These rock-funk-bluegrass-jazz-blues fusionists have been bringing their improvisational live shows to the masses since 1991. The group draws thousands to its biannual bi·an·nu·al

Tickets for their WOW Hall show are $8 in advance or $10 day of show.

On their new album, "Once We Were Trees," the members of Beachwood Sparks capture the sunny spirit of Southern California, circa 1972. The psychedelic alt-country/Brit-pop quartet from Los Angeles combines twangy lap steel with coarse guitars to create a sound that recalls the Byrds and Buffalo Springfield - with a little something extra.

Formed from the remnants of the SoCal bands Strictly Ballroom and Further, this group of California dreamers attracts hippies, indie kids, bikers, surfers and skateboarders.

Eugene audiences can get a glimpse of the Sparks at 8:30 p.m. Monday, when the band comes to the WOW Hall for the first of a two-night Sub Pop Showcase. Opening the show will be the underground rock favorite Love as Laughter Love As Laughter is an American indie pop band. The band was formed in 1994 by vocalist and guitarist Sam Jayne as a solo project following the break-up of his previous band, Lync.  and the Glands, an indie-pop band from Athens, Ga. Tickets are $7 at the door.

Tuesday night's Sub Pop lineup features the incendiary INCENDIARY, crim. law. One who maliciously and willfully sets another person's house on fire; one guilty of the crime of arson.
