Crestar Bank Taps Pathlore's PHOENIX to Provide Intranet-Delivered Distance Learning.

COLUMBUS, Ohio--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 15, 1997--Crestar Bank, the largest independent banking company headquartered in Virginia, has chosen PHOENIX for Windows from Pathlore Software for developing and distributing multimedia computer-based training See CBT.

(application) Computer-Based Training - (CBT) Training (of humans) done by interaction with a computer. The programs and data used in CBT are known as "courseware."
(CBT (Computer-Based Training) Using the computer for training and instruction. CBT programs are called "courseware" and provide interactive training sessions for all disciplines. ). Crestar will ultimately use PHOENIX to "stream" multimedia training over the company's intranet to nearly 9,200 employees in Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia District of Columbia, federal district (2000 pop. 572,059, a 5.7% decrease in population since the 1990 census), 69 sq mi (179 sq km), on the east bank of the Potomac River, coextensive with the city of Washington, D.C. (the capital of the United States). .

Crestar's training programs serve a diverse audience spread across 477 banking locations in the two states and District of Columbia, said Senior Vice President Mary Ellen Winks. Crestar's training department, management and employees have embraced distance learning because the bank's network enables delivery to every desktop, eliminating the need for travel and lost work time. "Training must address many different learning environments, student learning preferences, ESL (1) An earlier family of client/server development tools for Windows and OS/2 from Ardent Software (formerly VMARK). It was originally developed by Easel Corporation, which was acquired by VMARK.  (English as a Second Language) issues, and drive and study time. Bringing students into classrooms, which may be more than 200 miles from their worksite, is not always feasible," she said.

Crestar delivers more than 80 courses over its current network, ranging from government-mandated instruction on banking regulations to customer service instruction. Pathlore's PHOENIX for Windows will join a computerized training environment that includes a variety of tools, including PHOENIX mainframe CBT and standalone stand·a·lone

Crestar is migrating rapidly to the Windows client/server platform. "Corporate Training must be able to simulate client environments and effectively evaluate student performance," Winks said. "The development of an intranet gives us the opportunity to reach all audiences through a single Windows-based delivery channel. PHOENIX for Windows has all the pieces we need to make the company intranet work for training."

The PHOENIX network delivery architecture utilizes a unique bi-directional streaming method for courseware delivery and capturing student interactivity. Rather than download an entire training program at once, PHOENIX sends out and takes back one page at a time, for interactive communication with the student. This approach insures course learning objects are transmitted to the student desktop only at the time they are needed, dramatically reducing network traffic. In addition, student responses and progress within the course are sent back to the PHOENIX server, enabling organizations to track and score training effectiveness against their learning objectives.

, said Crestar's strong emphasis on intranet technology as a corporate strategy has put it ahead of many banking organizations in distance learning. "The goal of most financial institutions is to deliver training to every desktop," he said. "We are excited that Crestar executives recognize the power of PHOENIX and its ability to support the bank's business objectives."
