About the Art

Matthew Barney's Cremaster films are a series of five films created out of sequence. The series is epic and continuous, but each linked piece is a complete work and can stand alone. The films generally feature the artist in one or more roles. The beautiful and complex films are a mixture of history, autobiography, and mythology. The symbols and images are densely layered and interconnected.

Cremaster I takes place in two settings: a football stadium in Boise, Idaho “Boise” redirects here. For other uses, see Boise (disambiguation).

Boise is the capital and most populous city of the U.S. state of Idaho. It is the county seat of Ada County and the principal city of the Boise metropolitan area.

The actions, movements, and patterns in these two settings mirror each other. The film recalls the Busby Berkeley-style choreography of 1930s musicals. In this film, the artist's interest in the biology of male and female sexuality and conflicting gender roles seems to be the central focus, along with the transformation of the female body.

About the Artist

Matthew Barney was born in San Francisco San Francisco (săn frănsĭs`kō), city (1990 pop. 723,959), coextensive with San Francisco co., W Calif., on the tip of a peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, which are connected by the strait known as the Golden  in 1967. At the age of six his family moved to Idaho, where Barney played football in high school. He graduated from Yale where he studied medicine before becoming an artist. His background in medical studies, his interest in athletics, and his love of art inform his work as a sculptor and filmmaker. He now lives and works in New York New York, state, United States

. His rise in the art world marks all the stages of video's growth. First he performed in his studio and taped it; then he moved to taping his performance in a gallery setting. Later he built special sets, and now he makes complex, narrative videos on location.

Things to Consider

Ask students to describe what they see in this production still and to comment on their feelings about it. Compare this production still of a male chorus line in a football stadium with any still photograph of a football game. How are the costumes different? What do the two images suggest about gender roles and our expectations for such a setting?
