FAIRFAX, Va. -- Homeowners may be able to get away with turning their lights off to turn trick-or-treaters away, but unfortunately, lights on or off, household pests such as spiders, bats and rodents will come knocking. The National Pest Management Association The National Pest Management Association (NPMA), a non-profit organization with more than 5,000 members, was established in 1933 to support the professional pest control industry’s commitment to the protection of public health, food and property, reflected both in the  provides tips to homeowners on preventing pests through all of the holidays.

Bats, rodents and spiders are other critters that evoke a sense of fright. "Not only are they creepy, but they're a major nuisance when they get inside our homes," says Mannes. "They can cause serious health and property threats to homeowners."

To prevent pests from entering and infesting the home NPMA recommends homeowners:

* Keep wood and debris away from the exterior siding of the home.

* Cut tree branches and other plants back from the home.

* Clean the kitchen area frequently; Wipe counters, empty the garbage, avoid leaving pet food dishes out for long periods of time, and vacuum the floor frequently for crumbs.

* Seal cracks and small openings along the bottom of the house.

* Store snacks and sweets in closed containers.

* Keep trash in closed bins.
