Creel declares candidacy.


Interior Secretary Santiago Creel Santiago Creel Miranda (b. December 11 1954 in Mexico city) is a Mexican politician. He is a member of the conservative National Action Party (PAN).

He earned a Law degree from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM).
 stepped down from his post in a bid to win the presidential nomination of the National Action Party (PAN) ahead of the 2006 election. Creel is widely seen as President Fox's favorite to represent the conservative PAN, The Associated Press Associated Press: see news agency.

Creel--a soft-spoken lawyer--was the first interior secretary to face opposition majorities in both houses of Congress and he failed to win support among legislators for most of Fox's reform measures. In his resignation speech, Creel pledged to fight poverty and create more jobs, while battling street crime.

Labor Secretary Carlos Abascal--a conservative PAN stalwart--was named to replace Creel as interior secretary. Fox selected Fernando Flores to be interim labor secretary.
