In the case of Kyle Dean, going Hollywood also meant changing gender. Creature, the savvy Paris Patton documentary, traces Kyle's progress over two years, never losing sight of his downhome origins. It's the movie's big irony that the very thing Kyle wants to escape is what makes his story so interesting. Patton deftly sketches in Kyle's poor North Carolina North Carolina, state in the SE United States. Now sporting breasts, a head of big hair, and a Latino boyfriend, Stacy decides it's time It's Time was a successful political campaign run by the Australian Labor Party (ALP) under Gough Whitlam at the 1972 election in Australia. Campaigning on the perceived need for change after 23 years of conservative (Liberal Party of Australia) government, Labor put forward a to head back home to North Carolina. Patton is there, camera ready, to record all the tears and confusion as Stacy steps out of her rental car to greet her bewildered parents. These are working-class fundamentalist Christians who can't help viewing Stacy as damned but who'll whup whup v. Chiefly Southern U.S. Variant of whip. [Scots, variant of whip.] anyone who dares touch a hair on her head. Mom is thrilled by how pretty Stacy is but wonders why she hasn't had her teeth fixed. Ex-con Dad sees Stacy as his punishment for hustling and robbing gay men back in his younger days. Stacy herself talks about how wrong she thinks it is for two men to be together and how much happier she is now that she's a woman. Could it be her transsexuality trans·sex·u·al n. 1. One who wishes to be considered by society as a member of the opposite sex. 2. One who has undergone a sex change. is her way of honoring her parents' values after all? This is just one of many questions Patton's tight, rich, and potent film leaves us to ponder. |
