Jay Rich, editor and systems designer, "We replaced two of our Beta SP machines with BR-D85s and are now doing virtually all of our editing to Digital-S." Rich intends to use JVC's BR-D40 Digital S Dockable Recorder for acquisition in the future. Previously, Creative Network Studios was a strictly analog Beta SP facility. Like many studios around the country, they had been planning to go digital. "We were within 24 hours of placing an order for a single, very expensive high-end digital recorder See DVR and CD-R. when we decided to look at Digital-S," Rich said. Rich obtained a demonstration Digital-S machine from his local dealer, Technical Video Systems. "We had the demo demo - /de'moh/ 1. "We found that the picture quality of the Digital-S machine (in component) was better than D2 and D3 even after going down five to six generations." Multi-generation performance, along with the BR-D85's video pre-read feature were primary considerations in the purchase, according to Rich. Cost was another important consideration. Rich concluded that he could buy two Digital-S machines for the price of one high-end digital recorder. Having two decks with pre-read meant that he would not have to shuffle tapes back and forth to Beta SP to build his programs. And, the Digital-S solution also meant that if a machine went down, he'd still be operational with his second machine. Creative Network Studios does various types of video production ranging from one-hour shows for SportsSouth, to nationally aired television commercials. Its primary editing suite consists of two BR-D85 Digital-S recorders, several Beta SP feeders, a Sony BVE-900 editing controller, and a Grass Valley 100 component switcher. "I've been in this business for 30 years and have built more than a half-dozen edit suites," Rich said. "The picture quality of Digital-S is so much better than Beta SP. It's like the difference between regular old 3/4-inch and Beta SP. There's that much difference. Overall, I am extremely pleased with the format."
