Creative Design Solutions, Inc. Announces Industry's Smallest Thin Server Module.LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 17, 1997-- Building Block Allows OEMs and VARs to Design Easy-to-Use Thin Servers; New Server is First With Self Repairing File System and Email Alerts Creative Design Solutions, Inc. today announced the industry's smallest thin server module. The unit fits into a 3.5-inch footprint and contains all the hardware and software needed to design a thin server. By integrating the Plug & Stor(tm) 100 model PS100SA into their storage subsystems, OEMs and VARs can create "plug-and-play" thin servers that easily attach to networks via a 10 or 100 Mbps Ethernet connection. These thin servers are better than Windows NT (Windows New Technology) A 32-bit operating system from Microsoft for Intel x86 CPUs. NT is the core technology in Windows 2000 and Windows XP (see Windows). Available in separate client and server versions, it includes built-in networking and preemptive multitasking. machines for adding mass storage to networks because they are lower cost, easier to install and do not require license fees. In addition to its small size, the PS100SA is the first thin server module with a self repairing file system which improves system reliability. It is also the first to automatically send email messages that report on system status. The unit provides additional reliability with its embedded RAID 1 software which allows data to be mirrored. The new module was designed as an enabling technology for OEMs and VARs. The hardware architecture is based on an industry standard "socketed" Pentium processor. This gives OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) The rebranding of equipment and selling it. The term initially referred to the company that made the products (the "original" manufacturer), but eventually became widely used to refer to the organization that buys the products and and VARs the flexibility to scale the processor performance to their customer's needs, and to leverage their purchasing power Purchasing Power 1. The module was designed for a 133, 166 or 200 Mhz Pentium, and is sold with or without a processor. The PS100SA module includes a Pentium processor socket, 1 SO DIMM SO DIMM Small-Outline, Dual-In-Line Memory socket, 10/100 Mbps Ethernet port A socket on a computer or network device for plugging in an Ethernet cable. Benefits of Thin Servers Thin servers built from the PS100SA module boost network performance by eliminating the information bottlenecks that occur with a single central server. Thin servers can be distributed throughout the network to provide quick data access for groups of users. For example, a thin server could be placed in an accounting department to hold their data. This approach gives accounting quick access to their data without the need to wait for their requests to be processed by the central server. The ease-of-use of the thin server makes is possible for accounting to add and manage its own mass storage. Building a "Plug-and-Play" Thin Server Building a thin server with the PS100SA is easy since it mounts into a 3.5-inch or 5.25-inch drive bay. OEMs and VARs can quickly integrate the module into existing RAID towers or standard enclosures with hard disk drives, removable drives and CD-ROMs. The mass storage units are connected to the PS100SA via SCSI cables. The ESA software eliminates the need for a monitor, keyboard and mouse by allowing the server to be set up and managed through a standard browser from any computer on the network. This software also makes the thin server "plug-and-play" by allowing it to be attached to a network without the need to power down or reconfigure the network. The ESA soft-ware uses a self repairing file system known as journaling which logs path names to reduce the chance of data loss. The PS100SA also contains the EZ-Serv(tm) program which can be configured to automatically send email messages that notify administrators of problems such as a drive failure, disk full, mirror error, etc. Installing a "Plug-and-Play" Thin Server A thin server based on the PS100SA comes out of its shipping box ready for use. There are no disks to load or software to install since all software is built into its non-volatile semiconductor chips. The system is connected to a network using a standard RJ-45 Ethernet cable, and the transfer speed is automatically set to 10 or 100Mbps. Finally, the "self-prompting" EZ-Serv program takes the user through a short step-by-step process that sets up the system in minutes and makes it available to the network. Price and Availability The Plug & Stor 100 model PS100SA with a 133 Mhz processor is priced at $990 in single unit quantities. Evaluation units will be available in limited quantities in December, and full production will begin in January 1998.
