Creative Basket Making.

Creative Basket Making. Lois Walpole. Cincinnati, Ohio: North Light Books, 1989. Illustrated, 160 pp., hard

In this publication, the author, a professional basketmaker who formed her own company to market her limited edition basketware, shares a wealth of technical information about her craft. The book features two types of basket making--stake and strand, and plaiting--each covered in a self-contained section describing all the processes required to master that particular method of basketry.

Color photographs and line drawings illustrate Walpole's approaches to weaves, bases, borders and handles for both types of baskets. Materials and tools are noted, along with a comprehensive list of suppliers in America and Britain. This is a practical book in which the author also presents learning exercises and project/technique suggestions at the end of each section. It offers a valuable source of information and ideas for the craft of basketry at secondary, university and adult education levels.
