The band went through several lineup changes that included at least 2 singers, 2 guitarists and 3 bassists in its history. . The Robinsons are a prime example of the shift in how companies in Mexico view corporate security. In the past, employers believed real estate, machinery and vehicles were the assets they had to work hardest to protect. But in the last three years, companies have doubled their security spending from 2 to 4 percent of their annual budgets to better protect their top-level staff from all kinds of crime. Talent is now a company's most valuable--and vulnerable--resource. "This is a new trend in corporate security in Mexico," says Francisco Ramirez, general manager of Mexico City-based Corporacion de Alta Seguridad Privada. "The emphasis has definitively moved to people." The new security emphasis on people has two main reasons. On the one hand, new technologies have made it easier to protect facilities and vehicles. GPS (Global Positioning System Global Positioning System: see navigation satellite. Global Positioning System (GPS) Precise satellite-based navigation and location system originally developed for U.S. military use. ) has solved the problem of truck thefts to a great extent, especially between large companies who have the financial backing to spend in such technology. But corporations' switched priorities have more to do with the continued vulnerability of their top talent. The problem of insecurity in Mexico, specifically in the country's capital, still causes high-profile foreign employees to refuse posts south of the border. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] "Multinationals sending their top talent to Mexico face a big challenge," says Jack Harary, president of Harary Systems, a security company based in Mexico City. "That's why our company had to address these concerns by developing programs that firms use as a sort of benefit, a perk perk 1 v. perked, perk·ing, perks v.intr. 1. To stick up or jut out: dogs' ears that perk. 2. To carry oneself in a lively and jaunty manner. ." One of the new programs developed by Harary Systems is called "Expatriate Security/Emergency Response 24/7." It offers swift response to all types of emergencies, from car accidents to injuries and kidnapping. Harary says that it is the fastest growing and most requested service of his company. For example, a Fortune 500 multinational hired the service for 50 senior managers in Mexico, as well as Vittorio Benzi, an Italian mattresses manufacturer. The service is now available for about 250 people in Mexico City and other important centers of population like Puebla, Queretaro, Monterrey, Guadalajara, Veracruz and Toluca. "We give our clients a 24 hour hotline they can call at any time," Harary adds. Another options popular between multinationals are the crime avoidance or security awareness seminars. Within two or three hours, attendees learn about the victim selection process and receive guidance on how one can persuade the criminal to select some other target. They are taken by directors, executives and even mid-level company employees, as well as the staff wives and mature children. This prevention courses are normally complemented with secure driving seminars. Corporacion del Fuerte, a Coca Cola-bottler based in Tijuana, offered the driver awareness course for some of its top employees. As Harary says, "the dramatic increase in security courses for employees reflects multinational clients' preparedness and security awareness." Gideon Goodblatt, general manager of Garret Security Group, has a list of clients that he won't disclose for fear of drawing attention to them. He is also experienced in safeguarding movie stars on location in Mexico and company executives in Mexico City, Monterrey and Guadalajara. "It's no secret in the security business here in Mexico that Sony Electronics and other major companies have increased their budgets to include the wider range of security training programs now available," he says. "This has been the inevitable conclusion of the move away from protecting only buildings to protecting lives. Courses in evasive driving, self protection and vigilance VIGILANCE. The law requires a man who has a claim to enforce it in proper time, while the adverse party has it in his power to defend himself; and if by his neglect to do so, he cannot afterwards establish such claim, the are now commonplace." SECURITY GROUND RULES But as stated by David Robillard, Kroll's managing director in Mexico, a lot of security is mere common sense. "We teach people about using safe taxis taxis (tăk`sĭs), movement of animals either toward or away from a stimulus, such as light (phototaxis), heat (thermotaxis), chemicals (chemotaxis), gravity (geotaxis), and touch (thigmotaxis). , vetting house staff, chauffuers, things like that," he explains. "Sure, there are new, ultra-sophisticated gadgets introduced to the security market every day, but we also teach the security ground rules. They are paramount to security." For instance, 80 percent of all threats come from inside the company. So Kroll teaches all his corporate clients to check and double check Check and Double Check is a 1930 motion picture made and released by RKO based on the then-popular Amos 'n' Andy radio show. The title was derived from a catch phrase associated with the show. The making of the picture posed several problems. the backgrounds of their staff at the company and especially at home. "Do they really know their maid's background and do they know the last two or three jobs of their driver, most probably the man who takes their children to and from school, and why he left his previous employment?" asks Robillard. "Simple checks like that can go a long way in avoiding threats to the family." Kroll is one of the biggest security consultants in the world and has a long list of clients in Mexico, many of them multinationals. But not names they like to make public, citing commercial confidentiality. Echoing the words of Robillard, Harary says that what was once optional is no longer. The continued conviction of criminals who had 'inside' information is staggering. And the thorough 'haystack' type background search allows clients to delve deeper into the histories, personalities and family lives of persons they know nothing about. "Normally, your maid or chauffeur knows everything about you and you know nothing about them," he explains. "I would suggest that a thorough background search on all staff is a must. These people have daily contact with your family and you have to know that they are 100 percent trustworthy." In the past, one thing that undermined all security operations regarding kidnappings was a lack of faith in the Mexican police, so often accused of corruption and working hand in glove Adv. 1. hand in glove - in close cooperation; "they work hand in glove" cooperatively, hand and glove with extortionists. Happily, according to the security experts interviewed, a huge improvement has taken place in the performance of the authorities in recent years. "Police and the AFI AFI American Film Institute AFI Awaiting Further Instructions AFI Armed Forces Insurance AFI A Fire Inside (band) AFI Air Force Instruction AFI Australian Film Institute AFI Agencia Federal de Investigación (Agencia Federal de Investigacion) have shown a marked improvement in professionalism and responsibility," he explains. "For example, recently there was a disturbance reported where I live. Within minutes there were six armed police officers doing a thorough search of the building and grounds and performing in a most professional manner. That just would not have happened a few years ago." The rescue of Argentinean soccer coach Ruben Omar Romano by federal agents at the end of September, after 64 days of kidnapping, was another encouraging sign of the professionalization pro·fes·sion·al·ize tr.v. pro·fes·sion·al·ized, pro·fes·sion·al·iz·ing, pro·fes·sion·al·iz·es To make professional. pro·fes of the AFI. According to the Citizen Council for Public Safety (Consejo Ciudadano de Seguridad Publica), Mexico has overtaken Colombia to become the world leader in reported kidnappings. In the first half of 2005, there were 194 reported kidnappings in Mexico, versus 172 in Colombia and 169 in Brazil. "Of course, proactivity is no longer an option," says Harary. "Corporations in the United States are now legally obliged o·blige v. o·bliged, o·blig·ing, o·blig·es v.tr. 1. K & R INSURANCE RAISING That's why international companies sending their top talent to Mexico are also spending more on kidnapping insurance. "The way it works is that the company takes out insurance with an insurance firm--Lloyds of London, AIG AIG addressee indicator group (US DoD) AIG American International Group, Inc AiG Answers in Genesis (religious group in defense of Scripture) AIG Artificial Intelligence Group AIG Australian Industry Group and Chubb are leaders in the field," explains Robillard, from Kroll. "If an employee has the misfortune to be kidnapped, the kidnappers contact the company demanding a ransom ransom, price of redemption demanded by the captor of a person, vessel, or city. In ancient times cities frequently paid ransom to prevent their plundering by captors. The custom of ransoming was formerly sanctioned by law. , and the company contacts the insurance firm who then negotiate with the abductors. The police aren't involved at any stage." But he has a word of warning to those thinking of taking out kidnapping insurance: Executives must always remember that as soon as anyone is aware that an executive has insurance, he becomes a prime target. "I would go as far as to say you shouldn't even tell your spouse," he says. "Having kidnapping insurance may be a good way of making sure that, if you are abducted abducted Distal angulation of an extremity away from the midline of the body in a transverse plane and away from a sagittal plane passing through the proximal aspect of the foot or part, or away from some other specified reference point , you will return home safe and sound and in one piece. But, on the other hand, if it becomes known you have such insurance, you become an attractive proposition for any gang of kidnappers." Nevertheless, international risk management expert Thomas W. Harvey Thomas Watson Harvey (November 27, 1893 - June 27, 1978) was President-General of the Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League (UNIA) from 1956 to 1978. recommends any employer sending executives into high-risk countries like Mexico and Colombia purchase kidnap and ransom (K & R) insurance cover. Harvey, president and CEO of Assurex International, one of the world's largest privately held commercial insurance brokerage groups, said that Americans with K & R insurance are four times more likely to survive a kidnapping than the non-insured. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] Assurex educates employers about kidnap risks and extortion extortion, in law, unlawful demanding or receiving by an officer, in his official capacity, of any property or money not legally due to him. Examples include requesting and accepting fees in excess of those allowed to him by statute or arresting a person and, with demands, and train employees to manage their risks once they land on foreign soil. Harvey says that in 67 percent of cases, ransom is paid and the average payment is about US$ 2 million. K & R insurance typically covers ransom and extortion payments, hiring professional security consultants and negotiators, theft of ransom money, death of victims, transportation costs and payments to informants. To keep the dream of working abroad from becoming a nightmare, Assurex recommends employers put expatriate executives through a rigorous training program designed to help them assess the local cultural and political situation. In addition, employees should be taught what to do, and what not to do, in the event they are kidnapped. Robillard advises some simple groundwork to avoid robbery and abductions. As he explains, other than express kidnappings, most kidnaps for ransom require surveillance and planning. The kidnappers do that for a living and they are quite expert at finding the right target and tracking that person's routines. "Thus, the key to thwarting thwart tr.v. thwart·ed, thwart·ing, thwarts 1. The most universal forms of jewelry are the necklace, bracelet, ring, pin, and earring. and luxury cars at home. Kroll's managing director and other experts also give these recommendations: * Don't think you're immune because you're not rich. The most frequent kidnappings are middle class executives and their families. And remember, wealth is relative. A middle class income in the United States Income in the United States is measured by the United States Department of Commerce either by household or individual. The differences between household and personal income is considerable since 42% of households, the majority of those in the top two quintiles with incomes may well place you in the top end of the income scale in some of the world's most dangerous nations. * Vary your routine. Do not travel the same road, jog the same path or eat at the same restaurant every day. This is particularly true for expatriates stationed abroad for an extended period of time. Do not let your familiarity with a country and its people blind you to hidden dangers. * Only use official taxi stands taxi stand n. A reserved area where waiting taxicabs are parked. . Step in a cab abroad and you risk driving away in your kidnapper's car. * Steer clear of isolated or rural areas. Yet companies and security consultants play an invaluable role in protecting businesspeople. As Susan said, "Of course I still worry about kidnappings and theft, but I am more street-smart than I was when I moved here, and I am confident that our company prepared us for the unexpected. Now that I know what I should do to prevent criminals from targeting me and my family, I can enjoy the many exciting things Mexico City has to offer." Photographs by Carla Haselbarth What To Do? First of all, you cannot afford to ignore the insecurity problem. At a personal level, your life and the lives of your family members may be at risk. At the corporate level, the investment required to upgrade your security will be less than the real cost associated with a criminal attack against your personnel and/or installations. The key is to minimize our risks by being perceived as a difficult target. The point is to discourage criminals from selecting us as their victims, and pick on someone who has taken less proactive measures. How to upgrade our security? Here are some important guidelines. Personal security: 1. Review and update the company's crisis management program, validated with periodic desktop simulation exercises. 2. Give employees security awareness briefings tailored to minimize risks of random street crime. 3. Train executives and chauffeurs in defensive driving. Property security: 1. Conduct risk assessments and physical security surveys of offices, plants and residences of principal executives to identify and minimize security weak spots. 2. Review and establish thorough vetting mechanisms for new employees. 3. Enhace loss prevention measures by reviewing and monitoring on a periodic basis process control mechanisms designed to minimize internal theft and fraud opportunities, as well as the theft of proprietary information. 4. Specific to fraud, the Sarbanes-Oxley law obligates companies to not only establish appropriate internal financial controls, but also establish mechanisms to facilitate obtaining internal information regarding suspected fraudulent practices. In other words Adv. 1. in other words - otherwise stated; "in other words, we are broke" put differently , sweeping these problems under the rug may risk a liability in the submission of erroneous financial statements. Cargo transportation security: 1. Evaluate and upgrade your supply chain security. 2. Evaluate and upgrade internal controls in the dispatching of trucks to minimize information flight. 3. Investigate aggressively any cargo theft incident to convey the message to criminals that the company will not be an easy target or victim. 4. Genetic studies indicate that it is descended from the guanaco. Mercado first originated in Spain. This article is about the Polish political party. For other uses, see Familia (disambiguation). The original contras had been National Guardsmen during the regime of Anastasio Somoza (see Somoza family). A large grassy plain in South America, with scattered bushes and small trees. Plural of involucrum. en ninguna etapa". Informal Without delay; quickly. No circule por la misma calle, trote por el mismo camino o coma coma, in medicine coma, in medicine, deep state of unconsciousness from which a person cannot be aroused even by painful stimuli. The patient cannot speak and does not respond to command. en el mismo restaurante todos los dias.
