Global supercomputer leader Cray Inc. (Nasdaq:CRAY) today announced that it has installed a Cray SX-6 system at the Arctic Region Supercomputing Center The Arctic Region Supercomputing Center (ARSC) is a research facility organized under the University of Alaska Fairbanks. ) facilities in Fairbanks, Alaska Fairbanks (IPA: /ˈfɛərbæŋks/) is a Home Rule City in Fairbanks North Star Borough, Alaska, United States. .

ARSC will offer the system to the wider high-performance computing High-speed computing, which typically refers to supercomputers used in scientific research.  community for testing and evaluation. This is the first customer installation of a Cray SX-6 system in the United States under the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) The rebranding of equipment and selling it. The term initially referred to the company that made the products (the "original" manufacturer), but eventually became widely used to refer to the organization that buys the products and  agreement concluded last year between Cray and NEC (NEC Corporation, Tokyo, www.nec.com, www.necus.com) An electronics conglomerate known in the U.S. for its monitors. In Japan, it had the lion's share of the PC market until the late 1990s (see PC 98).

NEC was founded in Tokyo in 1899 as Nippon Electric Company, Ltd.

The long-term agreement gives Cray exclusive rights to distribute the rebranded NEC SX series of supercomputers in North America, and non-exclusive distribution rights in most other areas of the world. The SX-6 series is the world's most recent high-end, high-bandwidth vector supercomputer product line designed to serve industrial, academic and government customers.
