Cravath, Swaine & Moore LLP Elects Evan R. Chesler Presiding Partner.


NEW YORK -- Cravath, Swaine & Moore LLP has elected Evan R. Chesler as its next Presiding Partner. Mr. Chesler, who currently heads the Firm's 157-lawyer Litigation Department, will begin serving as Deputy Presiding Partner effective immediately and will officially assume the responsibilities of Presiding Partner on January 1, 2007. Mr. Chesler will be the Firm's tenth Presiding Partner.

In January of 2007, Mr. Chesler will succeed Robert D. Joffe, who will return to practicing law full-time. Mr. Joffe has served as the Firm's Presiding Partner since January 1, 1999, and has an extensive practice in the areas of antitrust, securities litigation and counseling and corporate governance. Evan Chesler

Mr. Chesler joined Cravath in 1976 and became a Partner in 1982. He was named Head of the Litigation Department in 1996. During the past several years, Mr. Chesler has been lead counsel in antitrust, intellectual property and general commercial cases for Alcoa, Bristol-Myers Squibb, DuPont, GlaxoSmithKline, IBM, Merck and Xerox. He has been cited as one of the country's leading practitioners in the antitrust, intellectual property and commercial litigation arenas by Chambers USA 2005: America's Leading Lawyers for Business and in antitrust and bet-the-company litigation by Best Lawyers in America 2006. He has also been named a Leader in Dispute Resolution by PLC Which Lawyer 2005.

Education and Clerkship

Mr. Chesler received a A.B. degree with highest honors in History from New York University New York University, mainly in New York City; coeducational; chartered 1831, opened 1832 as the Univ. of the City of New York, renamed 1896. It comprises 13 schools and colleges, maintaining 4 main centers (including the Medical Center) in the city, as well as the  in 1970, after which he earned an M.A. in Russian Area Studies at Hunter College in 1973 and a J.D. cum laude from New York University School of Law Coordinates:  The New York University School of Law (NYU Law) is the law school of New York University. Mr. Chesler is the President of the Institute of Judicial Administration, the oldest nonpartisan organization in the U.S. devoted to the education of the judiciary.  of Women Voters Education Foundation. Mr. Chesler is also a member of the American Bar Association American Bar Association (ABA), voluntary organization of lawyers admitted to the bar of any state. Founded (1878) largely through the efforts of the Connecticut Bar Association, it is devoted to improving the administration of justice, seeking uniformity of law , New York State Bar Association The New York State Bar Association (NYSBA), with about 72,000 members, is the largest voluntary association of lawyers in the United States. Writing and Speaking

Mr. Chesler is the author of numerous articles on legal topics as well as a chapter in the popular book, Inside the Minds of Leading Litigators (Aspatore Books, 2002). He is a guest lecturer at New York University Law School and has been an adjunct faculty member at NYU's College of Arts and Science, where he has taught an honors seminar entitled, "Constitutional Rights in Times of National Crisis". His nonlegal publications include The Russian Jewry Reader (Behrman House, 1974) and South Africa Before World War II (The Historian, Huntington Hill Society, 1970).

Involvement with NYU

Mr. Chesler and his wife have endowed the Barbara and Evan Chesler Pre-Law Program of New York University's College of Arts and Science, and the Chesler Scholarship, which is awarded each year to an outstanding, pre-law junior at the College. Mr. Chesler is a member of NYU's Board of Overseers of the Faculty of Arts Historically the Faculty of Arts was one of the four traditional divisions of the teaching bodies of universities, the others being theology, law and medicine.[1] Nowadays it is a common name for the faculties teaching humanities.
