 crash which left the 42 year -old pilot from Wirral needing hospital treatment remains a mystery.

The microlight crashed in a field at Halsall near Ormskirk last November. Owner and pilot Peter Lesley Dowd, of Cortsway West, Greasby, had to be freed by emergency services emergency services Emergency care '…services …necessary to prevent death or serious impairment of health and, because of the danger to life or health, require the use of the most accessible hospital available and equipped to furnish those services'  after being knocked unconcious.

An official Air Accident Investigation Branch report into the incident says no specific cause can be identified for the loss of engine power that occurred just before the crash.

The report, pub-lished today, says Mr Dowd -- a student pilot with 22 hours' flying experience at the time -- was at around 2, 000ft when the engine lost power.

Realising he would not reach an airfield at Ince Blundell Ince Blundell is a village to the north of Liverpool, England, on the A565. Ince Blundell is probably the oldest settlement within the borough of Sefton.There are two associated hamlets of Lady Green and Carr Houses.  he chose a field to make a forced landing. The ground was wet and on touchdown the nose wheel dug in and the aircraft overturned.

The report concluded: ``The condition of the engine was commensurate with its age but, despite issues noted in examination of the engine, no specific cause for the loss of power could be identified. ''
