But instead of phoning for an ambulance, the male driver sped off before stopping and dragging her on to the side of the road, leaving her for dead. He then fled the scene with the length of metal still embedded in the car. A police investigation will consider whether the man had any reason not to be seen with the woman. The woman is in a critical condition at Walsgrave Hospital in Coventry suffering from severe head injuries.
