A total of 3,833 vehicles have been damaged in non-injury road accidents over the same time, said traffic police.

Road accident calls to the ambulance services normally go up in the month of Ramadan, with most of the calls coming between 5pm and 6pm, as people head home to break their fast, said SMC accident and emergency department sources.

"While there are normally between 15 and 18 calls for road accidents every day; during this month, there are sometimes more than 20 calls. Many of these result in paramedics treating the victims for minor injuries on the spot," they said.

Department chairman Dr Jassim Al Mehza said the general increase in the number of road traffic accident injuries was a cause for concern.

"While I cannot say that there is an increase since the beginning of the Holy Month, what I can say is that there is an increase overall," he said.

On an average, doctors see at least one serious injury every day as the result of a traffic accident.

"This is the case any day and not necessarily during Ramadan," said Dr Al Mehza.

He said the Health Ministry was always co-ordinating with the Traffic Directorate in educating people on safe driving habits, including the use of seat belts and avoiding speeding.

In the only fatal accident so far this month, two Bahraini youngsters died on the spot and four others were injured in a head-on collision A head-on collision is one where the front ends of two ships, trains, planes or vehicles hit each other, as opposed to a side-collision or rear-end collision.
