University Hospitals, Chicago biz team to test cancer screening tools

As a gynecologist gynecologist /gy·ne·col·o·gist/ (-kol´ah-jist) a person skilled in gynecology.

at University Hospitals of Cleveland University Hospitals is a major not-for-profit medical center in Cleveland, Ohio, United States. With 150 locations throughout northeast Ohio, it encompasses a network of hospitals, outpatient centers and primary care physicians. , Dr. George Gorodeski has dedicated his career to women's health Women's Health Definition

Women's health is the effect of gender on disease and health that encompasses a broad range of biological and psychosocial issues.
. Now he's teaming with a Chicago company in hopes of turning two of his discoveries into tools that will enable women to be treated faster and better.

Dr. Gorodeski is working with CytoCore Inc., which develops cancer screening systems, to conduct clinical trials on two potential inventions -- a biomarker that would distinguish between pre-cancerous and cancerous cells in the uterus, and a drug delivery system for the cervix cervix /cer·vix/ (ser´viks) pl. cer´vices   [L.]

CytoCore is raising $2 million in private money to foot the bill for the clinical trials, which Dr. Gorodeski said likely would begin within three months. Gene Martineau, director of communications Director of Communications is a position in the private and public sectors. The Director of Communications is responsible for managing and directing an organization's internal and external communications.  at CytoCore, said his firm hopes to attract companies to help pay for the trials.

By not applying for research grants from the National Institutes of Health, clinical trials can begin faster and, if successful, the products can be taken to market quicker, said Stephen Behm, a consultant who is working with UH to help commercialize its discoveries. The products would be licensed to CytoCore.

Though Dr. Gorodeski cautions that much work needs to be done before the products can be proven successful and be put on the market, he said preliminary data on the biomarker shows it could be a promising means of detecting cervical and endometrial cancers in women.

If the clinical trials produce good results, Dr. Gorodeski said he hopes to develop the biomarker into an annual test that would screen the lining of the uterus for cancer. Such screening now is not performed on women as part of their annual exams, said Dr. Gorodeski, who also is a professor of reproductive biology, oncology, physiology and biophysics biophysics, application of various methods and principles of physical science to the study of biological problems. In physiological biophysics physical mechanisms have been used to explain such biological processes as the transmission of nerve impulses, the muscle  at Case Western Reserve University.

"The costs of not finding the disease early on are much greater than going through the screening once a year," he said.

Dr. Gorodeski also is working on a more effective way to treat problems such as endometrial endometrial /en·do·me·tri·al/ (en?do-me´tre-il) pertaining to the endometrium.

Cervical cancer is a disease in which the cells of the cervix become abnormal and start to grow uncontrollably, forming tumors.
. With CytoCore's help, he'll study the development of a device that would be affixed af·fix

directly to the cervix to deliver medication to the cancerous area.

"It would target only the cervix, not the adjacent organs," Dr. Gorodeski said. "It could be important to patients who are at risk for developing high-grade cervical dysplasia Cervical dysplasia

 and cervical cancer."

UHC's Mr. Behm said the medicine delivered by the device still would be considered chemotherapy, but it wouldn't be injected into the bloodstream, as is usually the case. Therefore, other parts of the body would not be inflicted with chemicals, which means patients wouldn't experience the side effects Side effects

often associated with cancer treatment, he said.

Dr. Gorodeski's inventions are the latest from UH, which in the last year has become more active in helping doctors identify treatment ideas that could be marketed.

And there are plenty more inventions in the works.

"We plan on having more things like this to talk about," Mr. Behm said.
