Craighead County repeats drop in sales tax receipts.


For the first time since 2002, Craighead County reported a second consecutive month of declining revenue from its I percent sales tax sales tax, levy on the sale of goods or services, generally calculated as a percentage of the selling price, and sometimes called a purchase tax. It is usually collected in the form of an extra charge by the retailer, who remits the tax to the government.  receipts when compared with the same month in the previous year.

In March, the county collected $1.2 million, which was down 8.1 percent from March 2008, according to according to

And in April, the county reported it received $1.2 million, which was off 5 percent from the same month in 2008.

 Patton III said he wasn't sure what caused the declines, which reflect the amount collected at Craighead County's cash registers two months ago.

"Of course we're looking at what was going on two months ago," Patton said. "I'm hoping whatever it is will have turned around and we'll know two months ago from now how we're doing today."

Even with the declines, the sales tax has generated $5.3 million in 2009, which is about the same amount collected during the first four months in 2008.
